Where to buy an Istanbulkart
Metro İstanbul confirms that Istanbulkart is accepted on its rail network and that cards and top-ups are available at station Biletmatik machines. The municipal visitor guide also explains that the card purchase price and the travel balance are separate.
Start at an official station ticket machine or an authorised sales point. Check that the machine offers a new card, rather than only balance loading or a limited-use ticket. A sign advertising top-ups does not by itself confirm that new cards are in stock.
A practical first-purchase checklist
- Check your route first: identify the departure station, interchange and stop nearest your hotel using the operator’s map.
- Read the product name on the machine. A rechargeable Istanbulkart, a limited-use ticket and a bundled tourist pass are different products.
- Check the card price and the amount of travel credit before confirming payment.
- Check the machine’s accepted payment methods and change instructions. Do not assume that every machine accepts the same banknotes or bank cards.
- Check the displayed balance after loading. Keep any receipt until you have confirmed the transaction.
How much should you load?
Use the official Istanbulkart price and limit information and the fare information for your intended transport operator. We do not quote a fixed 2026 card price or a universal fare here because these can change and different journeys can have different charging rules.
Calculate the journeys you expect to make, including changes of transport. Do not budget on the assumption that an anonymous visitor card receives the same transfer discounts or refunds as a personalised card. The municipality states that certain benefits are reserved for personalised cards.
Airport arrivals and hotel location
Check the service you actually plan to use. Buying an Istanbulkart does not establish that it is accepted by every airport shuttle. For Havaist, consult the operator’s current routes, timetable and payment instructions directly.
When comparing hotels, look beyond the name of the nearest station. Check walking distance with luggage, stairs or lifts, service hours and the number of interchanges. For a late arrival, arrange a backup if public transport will not cover your journey.

Does buying the card include travel credit?
The municipal visitor guide distinguishes the card fee from the balance you load for travel. Read the machine’s purchase summary rather than assuming credit is included.
Can several travellers rely on one card?
Check the current rules for your card and journey before sharing. Do not assume unlimited repeated use, identical discounts or identical refund rights. Separate cards can make it easier to track individual journeys and balances.
Can I use a mobile app instead?
Check the current registration requirements and whether your phone and intended service support the payment method. Do this before relying on it for your first airport journey.
